Going Deeper (5th July ’26)

Each week we’re publishing some questions to think about based on the Sunday messages & Bible readings.

These can be used in home groups, with others or on your own, and are designed to help you engage in the passage and themes in more depth and reflect on how God might be speaking to you through them.

Icebreaker Question

What’s the most unexpected invitation you’ve ever received — and how did you respond?

Opening Prayer

Lord Jesus,
Thank you that when you enter the room, everything changes.
You see us fully — beyond our labels, our failures, and our fears — and you still say, “Follow me.”
Open our hearts today to your call.
Give us Levi’s courage to rise, leave what holds us back, and walk with you.
Fill this group with your Spirit so we may see others as you see them, welcome as you welcome, and trust that you equip those you call.
Be present among us now. Amen.

Reading & Questions

Read Luke 5:27-39

  1. Levi was despised, written off, and socially avoided — yet Jesus saw a disciple, not a problem. Where do you find it hardest to see people as Jesus sees them, rather than through the labels society gives?
  2. Levi “got up, left everything, and followed him” without negotiation or delay. What makes immediate obedience difficult for us today — and what might help us respond more like Levi?
  3. Levi’s first instinct after meeting Jesus was to throw a banquet and invite everyone he knew — even fellow tax collectors. How might simple hospitality become a more intentional part of our witness?
  4. The Pharisees grumbled about Jesus’ guest list and catering instead of celebrating transformed lives. Where do “complaints” or preferences risk distracting us from the heart of Jesus’ mission?
  5. Jesus insists that the new life he brings cannot simply be patched onto old systems or habits. What “old wineskins” might God be asking our church — or you personally — to release so that something new can flourish?

Closing Prayer

Pray together, asking that God would give each of you eyes to see people the way He does, courage to follow when he calls, and willingness to let go of old wineskins.
Pray that God would fill us with his Spirit so that our homes, workplaces, and conversations become places where his grace enters the room through us.
Ask him to send us out as people shaped by his welcome, his mercy, and his mission.
