Going Deeper (26th July ’26)

Each week we’re publishing some questions to think about based on the Sunday messages & Bible readings.

These can be used in home groups, with others or on your own, and are designed to help you engage in the passage and themes in more depth and reflect on how God might be speaking to you through them.

Icebreaker Question

What is your first reaction when you hear the word 'authority,' — comfort, suspicion, frustration, indifference, or something else? Why?

Opening Prayer

Lord God, as we gather together, help us to come honestly before you with all that is going on in our lives and in the world around us.
In times of uncertainty, conflict, and anxiety, remind us that you are not absent or overwhelmed, but are sovereign, loving, and faithful.
Thank you that Psalm 2 points us to your anointed King, and that in Jesus we see the true King who reigns with justice, mercy, and peace.
Help us to place our hope not in human power or political promises, but in you.
Teach us what it means to take refuge in Christ, to live under his rule, and to offer our lives in worship and service.
Guide our conversation, open our hearts, and help us listen well to you and to one another.
Amen.

Reading & Questions

Read Psalm 2 & Revelation 22:1-5

  1. James described the Psalms as honest prayers that do not sugarcoat life. How easy or difficult do you find it to bring fear, anger, confusion, or political anxiety honestly before God?
  2. Psalm 2 begins with the nations plotting and resisting God’s rule. Where do you see that same desire to 'throw off' God’s ways in the world, or in yourself, today?
  3. The passage reminds us that human authority is real but temporary and provisional. How might that shape the way we as Christians respond to political leaders — whether we feel hopeful, worried, frustrated, or apathetic?
  4. Psalm 2 was originally about God’s anointed king, but Christians read it as pointing ultimately to Jesus. What difference does it make to say that Jesus is the true King over all creation?
  5. The Psalm ends with a call to take refuge in God. What would it look like practically this week for you to stop 'doing your own thing' and take refuge in Christ instead?

Closing Prayer

Spend some time praying for each other and for the world, in particular praying for the 'healing of the nations' as promised in Revelation 22.
