Going Deeper (26th Apr ’26)

Each week we’re publishing some questions to think about based on the Sunday messages & Bible readings.

These can be used in home groups, with others or on your own, and are designed to help you engage in the passage and themes in more depth and reflect on how God might be speaking to you through them.

Icebreaker

What’s your favourite kind of breakfast, and is there a memory or feeling you associate with it?

Prayer

Lord God, thank you for this chance to study your word.
Thank you that you promise to meet us here as you met your disciples on the shore of the sea of Galilee.
Help us to hear your voice today. Amen.

Reading & Questions

Read John 21:1-14

  1. The Disciples’ State of Mind
The disciples return to fishing while waiting, uncertain, and low. What do you think fishing represents for them at this moment?
Peter says, “I’m going fishing,” and the others reply, “We’ll go with you.” What does this moment tell us about shared struggle and companionship in faith?
  2. Effort, Failure, and Listening
The disciples work all night and catch nothing. How does this speak to times when our best efforts come up empty?
Jesus’ instruction sounds simple—and possibly foolish—to tired, experienced fishermen. Why might listening to Jesus be hardest when we feel most competent or exhausted?
  3. Breakfast on the Shore
Jesus asks them to bring fish—but doesn’t need them. What does this teach us about the relationship between God’s provision and our participation? And why might this challenge our pride?
  4. Grace and Following Jesus
What might waiting on Jesus look like practically for us today?

Closing Prayer

Conclude this time together by praying for the world, our church, for those you love and for each other.
