Going Deeper (16th Aug ’26)

Each week we’re publishing some questions to think about based on the Sunday messages & Bible readings.

These can be used in home groups, with others or on your own, and are designed to help you engage in the passage and themes in more depth and reflect on how God might be speaking to you through them.

Icebreaker Question

What is something small or silly that makes you think, “How long, Lord, how long?”
For example: waiting for the kettle to boil, being stuck behind a slow tractor, a software update, children finding their shoes, or the last minute of a plank!

Opening Prayer

Lord, we praise you for this opportunity to reflect on how we respond to hard times.
Thank you for this psalm and the assurance that you love us – whatever season we find ourselves in.
Please speak to us and bless us now as we gather around your word.

Reading & Questions

Read Psalm 6

  1. Psalm 6 begins with David honestly expressing deep anguish before God. How easy or difficult do you find it to pray honestly when you are distressed, tired, angry, or afraid?
  2. David asks, “How long, Lord, how long?” Where have you experienced seasons of waiting or endurance, and what does this psalm teach us about bringing those seasons to God?
  3. On Sunday Julia said there are “no unacceptable emotions” before God. Do you agree and if so how might this change the way we think about lament, prayer, and worship?
  4. David’s circumstances do not appear to change immediately, but his hope is restored because he knows God has heard him. What difference does it make to believe that God hears your prayers, even before you see an answer?
  5. The study points to the gospel and God’s faithfulness in Jesus as the ultimate reason we can trust him. How does the cross help us hold on to hope when life feels painful, unresolved, or overwhelming?

Closing Prayer

Pray together – sharing some of your own reasons for lament if you feel able. Or praying generally for our broken world.
